Definition of “yima”
In the days of Imperial China, riders on horseback were used to deliver news, state documents, military reports, and other materials from one place to another. The couriers and horses were maintained by the royal court.
The stations that provided food and lodging for the couriers and horses are called “yizhan” in Chinese. As such, the courier horses came to be known as “yima”. The term yima is often seen in BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) and fengshui and symbolizes activities.
Those who have a Yima Star (commonly known as Horse Star or Travel Star) in their BaZi tend to be very active and cannot tolerate a sedentary lifestyle. Such people are often very restless, unable to ground oneself and always on the go.
Tourist guides, businessmen, diplomatic and military personnel etc who have to travel frequently are usually found to have a Yima Star in their BaZi.
The Yima Theory
From its definition, yima equates to lots of movements or activities, which can be related to leisure/business travel, job transfer, house removal, work promotion, and so forth.
In fengshui, it is, therefore, believed that activating the yima spot on the Yima Day and Yima Time can trigger off some kinds of movements. Energizing yima spot might help in situations like application for job transfer, overseas studies, migration, etc.
There are 3 types of fengshui yima spots: personal, yearly, and house:-
Personal Yima Spot
The location of the Personal Yima Spot is based on the Chinese horoscope of a person. Each spot is 15 degrees in range and located at secondary intercardinal points.
Example: for Monkey, Rat & Dragon horoscope
Their Personal Yima Spot will be 52.5 to 67.5 degree East-NorthEast.
As the word “personal” suggests, the “personal yima spot” affects only the individual concerned.
Yearly Yima Spot
Where the Yearly Yima Spot lies depends on the Chinese horoscope for the year. Such Yima Spot can affect anyone in the household.
House’s Yima Spots
There are two yima spots in every house. The facing and sitting directions of the property must be known before their locations can be calculated.
For example, for South-North orientation, the two yima spots will be (1) West-Southwest (232.5 to 247.5 degree) and (2) East-Northeast (52.5 to 67.5 degree).

Activation of house’s yima spots
Activation of yima spots in the house has to be carried out on a Yima Day and Yima Time for it to take effect. Energizing the yima spots involves placing some horse figurines in those two areas. Care must be taken in the choice of figurine and its placement.
Using the South-North orientation example, the Yima Day and Time will be:-
Yin Day & Yin Time OR Shen Day & Shen Time
(i.e. Tiger Day at 3 a.m. – 5 a.m. OR Monkey Day at 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.)
[Note: In above example, the day and time is expressed using the Chinese Zodiac signs. Tiger Day is shown in the Chinese Almanac as ‘Yin Day’ and Monkey Day as ‘Shen Day’. The two-hour period 3 a.m. to 5 a.m is known as ‘Yin Hour’ and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m is called ‘Shen Hour’.
This can be quite confusing to those who are not familiar with Chinese Zodiac Signs.]
